Crystal J. Lucky is a proud native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was raised in the New Bethlehem Baptist Church in West Philadelphia and was saved at an early age. During her developing and young adult years, she was trained in various areas of Christian Education and the music ministry. She went on to spend many years in ministry in an international Pentecostal church organization where she served in the Music, Women’s, Youth and Missions departments. In 1991, she was licensed to preach the Gospel, and in 1995 she was ordained. In 1993, she and her husband, Dr. Timmy L. Lucky, founded Sword of the Spirit Church in Lansdowne, Pennsylvania, where they have served for the past 30 years. Professionally, Dr. Lucky is the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and Professor of English at Villanova University, where she has taught since 1996. She has also served as the interim chairperson of the Political Science department and is the former director of the University’s Africana Studies Program. She holds a Th.D. in Biblical Studies from Manna Bible College (2019), a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in English (1999), an M.A. from Yale University in Afro-American Studies (1989), and a B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania in English and Communications (1985).
